Mobile ecommerce is set to be the ‘Next Big Thing’TM for the ecommerce industry and it is an exciting prospect; Being able to receive sales from a captive audience who can shop 24 hours a day, even while they’re at work, or away from a computer.
The take up of mobile ecommerce is being slowed down to some extent by the ongoing development of the technology behind mobile internet, obviously the iPhone is leading the way in this respect with its browser technology replicating that of browsers on normal PC’s but there are many users still accessing the web from their mobile devices through proprietary systems. However once this settles down there is sure to be an explosion of apps and systems designed to enable mobile eCommerce properly.
Once it does ecommerce websites are going to be targeting the early takers of the technology and it is possible to predict the kinds of stores very well as we already have demographic information for the current group of mobile ecommerce users. Data from the marketing Agency Merkle suggests that the main group spearheading the take up of mobile internet use (and thus, the most likely to patronise mobile ecommerce sites) is actually not teenagers but those in their thirties with a definite skew towards men.
With this data we can see that it would be reasonable to predict that the early successes of mobile ecommerce will be the kind of retailers who already have a good customer base within that demographic and that for retailers to try and broaden this trend will take some careful marketing through traditional eCommercewebsites to push their customers into the use of mobile ecommerce.
Advansys are looking forward to these developments and to taking our current and future clients into this exciting new arena.
