White space is nothing. White space is the absence of content. White space does not hold content in the way that a photograph or text holds meaning, yet it actually does gives meaning, through context, to both image and text.

It's surprising how the use of white space is misunderstood. So often have I created a design, and the client points to the white space, and wants to fill it with something. Believe it or not, white space can make or break the effective transmission of images and text. Compare the mass-market woman's weekly magazines to Vogue. In the quality class of publication, white space is so dominant that even the advertising is simplified, highly visual, and heavily coded. White space used in the right way, gives focus, and changes the class of a design.

This sounds easy? However just placing an image on a blank page can also give the impression that you have put no time into it, making it look cheap. The placement of the image is just as important as the surrounding white space, the composition is key, and this takes time to perfect. Use white space wisely, and the results will be clear. Get rid of anything unessential, get the balance right and the design will have so much style.
