Ecommerce Websites Sensitive to Public Events

Online shopping has been embraced by many for the great convenience it provides. Particularly in Britain where the weather is often wet and windy, people are more than happy to stay in the comfort of their own homes and place an order instead of pounding the pavements of the high street. Similar to the past time of window shopping, virtual browsing has also been on the rise with many people spending hours on end searching websites for bargains and impulse buys.

Many ecommerce websites have benefited from this as it's certainly helped boost the continuously growing number of sales and revenue they've achieved. For many years it seemed that nothing could draw the UK's gaze away from their computer and mobile device screens. However this August internet shops experienced a first. Online sales in August experienced the largest drop in five years, courtesy of one of the world's biggest events – The Olympic Games.

Many stores across the UK expected to achieve a great increase in sales over the summer period as people got geared up for the Games and international visitors flooded the capital city. On the contrary, residents and visitors left the inviting glow of ecommerce websites on a computer screen and the winding roads of the British High Street in favour of their televisions to watch the biggest sports event in the world.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), August online sales fell by 6.7% compared to the previous month. This was the biggest one month drop since December 2007. Furthermore, the sale of large household goods decreased by 2.7%, also the biggest drop since the beginning of 2010. Even with the increase in the sale of sports equipment and Olympic themed products, ecommerce websites could not effectively compete with the television.

They need to be able to predict how the market will behave and either capitalise on it, or make preparations to safeguard themselves from significant reductions in sales.
